Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music, and is sometimes referred to as a game. It was developed in Brazil mainly by African communities at the beginning of the 16th Century.


Meetings are on Tuesdays only 6-8PM, at Institut Francais Birmanie (in the café or lecture room upstairs), no previous experience is needed and it's free of charge.

There are a number of small yoga groups that meet regularly in Yangon. You can check the Facebook group facebook.com/groups/yogainyangon/ for regular updates about various classes happening across town but here's a few to start with:


Gabrielle Paluch leads a class in the beautiful Bahan Zey, close to Shwe Dagon Pagoda,  every Monday and Tuesday at 6:30 pm. Price: 7,000 kyats. Bring your own mats. Call 09 430 570 23; email [email protected]


Karie teaches classes at Kuuzchi Yoga; all classes are one hour long, open-level Vinyasa Flow Yoga. One session is 10,000 kyat or you can purchase 10 sessions for 75,000.  First class is free and mats are available.  Class is held outside in an open air pagoda. Private or small group classes are available upon request.

Jojo teaches a small class, with 12 people maximum. The style is playful, uplifting, flowing Vinyasa Yoga. There are 3 classes:

Sunday 11 am - Intermediate dynamic vinyasa flow: recommended for those with a foundation in basic vinyasa yoga postures looking to challenge their practice with a creative flow.
Sunday 1pm - Beginners / Gentle flow: recommended for those new to yoga or interested in a slower, mellower practice.  

Wednesday 6:45pm - All levels Vinyasa flow:  recommended for anyone who has attended at least 3 yoga classes.

An 8 week course taught by Sjoukje W. Zilstra  starts Tues 21st October at Pun Hlaing Golf Estate. It's a 90 minute class starting at 6pm. Please email for more details or to book a [email protected]



Most Gyms and fitness centres in Yangon offer aerobics classes. A decent up-town option is the Sweat Club at Mi Casa Hotel Apartments on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, which offers a special deal for non-gym members who just want to do aerobics. Classes start at 5:30 on a Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and cost $12 per class or $50 for the month (down from $110).

Zumba is a fusion of dance and aerobics, created by a Colombian choreographer in the 1990s. It incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Approximately 14 million people take weekly Zumba classes in over 140,000 locations across more than 185 countries The lovely Mimi offers classes at Balance Fitness gym in Avenue 64 Hotel.

Latin Dance

Hola dance club runs Latin dance classes on Monday,Wednesday and Saturday.  Beginners’ classes are from 6:00 to 7:30pm and advanced classes run straight afterwards. Classes cost 1lakhs for 15 hours and you can also organise private classes for a few hundred USD.

Movement with Music dance offers a bespoke dance class for children. Bu Khine Thu has one class running at 12.30 – 2.30 on Sundays for 10 to 13 year olds. Class times and durations can be negotiated.
